Pronoun Short words that replace a noun, like 'it', 'she', 'he', 'you', 'we', 'they', 'us', 'them'.
Simile Where one thing is compared to another thing, using a connective word such as 'like' or 'as'.
Metaphor A comparison showing the similarity between two quite different things where one is described as the other.
Repetition A word that is used more than once in close proximity by the writer.
Symbolism Where an object is used to represent an abstract idea.
Imagery The use of visual descriptors to convey an idea to the reader
Sibilance A literary device where strongly stressed consonants create a hissing sound.
Alliteration Repetition of initial consonants for a specific effect.
Simple Sentence A sentence that is made up of a single clause; it has a subject and one main verb.
Complex Sentence A sentence that has a main clause (which could stand alone as a simple sentence) and a dependent clause (which could not stand alone as a sentence on its own).
Personification Representing an idea in human form or presenting a thing as having human characteristics.
Verb A word that identifies actions, thoughts, feelings or the state of being.
Adjective A word that describes a noun.
Adverb A word used to modify verbs, adjectives or whole sentences.
