Description

Phrasal verbs are idiomatic expressions, combining verbs and prepositions to make new verbs whose meaning is often not obvious from the dictionary definitions of the individual words. They are widely used in both written and spoken English, and new ones are formed all the time as they are a flexible way of creating new terms

take down to remove something that was previously in a higher place: *It must be time to take down the holiday decorations *I took the pictures down after they left.
read over ler com cuidado, em detalhes *I read over the homework, but couldn't make any sense of it. *I read over my essay to check for errors.
put off adiar, deixar para depois *We asked the boss to put off the meeting until tomorrow.
point out ressaltar, assinalar, chamar atenção para um assunto *As we drove through Paris, Francoise pointed out the major historical sites.
pick up apanhar algo: *He picked his coat up off the floor. *Could you pick up the phone?
pick out escolher de acordo com opções existentes *She picked out the guy she thought had stolen her purse. *Can you pick out the three deliberate mistakes in this paragraph?
make out distinguir, decifrar, compreender *He was so far away, we really couldn't make out what he was saying.

look over examinar, checar (rapidamente): *The lawyers looked over the papers before questioning the witness.
leave out omitir *Have I left anyone out? *You left out the part about the police chase down Asylum Avenue.
hold up "peraí" *Hold up. Where are you going?
hang up pendurar, por no gancho *She hung up the phone before she hung up her clothes.
hold back segurar, reter *He held back, terrified of going into the dark room.
