Standard and difference in 10 GB Ethernet - IEEE 802.3ae - Difference of the predecessors only in the PHY (operate only in Full-Duplex)
PMD - Physical Media Dependent
Physical Media Dependent - Various types of transceivers for 10 GBE
LAN PHY - Interconnects switches in a campus network, predominant in the core layer
WAN PHY - Interfaces with SONET or SDH networks founded in WANs

Explains Ethernet autonegotiation The link speed is determined by electrical signaling. If both end are configured with autonegotiation, they will use highest speed in the link
Interface range MACRO switch (config)#define interface-range PORTCHANNEL fa0/1 , fa0/2 - 5 , fa0/10 switch(config)#interface range PORTCHANNEL
Explains how to configure the port speed Use the speed command to set a speed of 10, 100, 1000, or Autonegotiate (the default).
Explains how to configure the port duplex mode A port can operate in half-duplex, full-duplex, or autonegotiated mode. Autonegotiation is allowed only on UTP 10/100 and 10/100/1000 ports Switch(config-if)# duplex { auto | full | half}
Explains how to configure port error detection By default, a Catalyst switch detects an error condition. Err-disable state if detect an error cause: Switch(config)# [ no ] errdisable detect cause [ all | cause-name ]
Automatically Recover from Error Conditions 1.- shutdown no shutdown - Before re-enable the interface we must detect the issue. Switch(config)# errdisable recovery cause [ all | cause-name ] [port down for 300 seg (default)] Switch(config)# errdisable recovery interval seconds (change timer)
Explains how to verify the port state #show interfaces Ge 0/0 #show interfaces status #show interfaces status err-disable
Explains how to verify port speed and duplex mode #show interfaces G0/0 Always make sure both ends of a connection are set to the same speed and duplex mode
Covers CDP neighbor discovery - Advertisements are sent at regulars intervals, nothing is expected in return - Layer 2 - Only connected neighbors - Enable by default - 60 seconds interval
Switch1#show cdp neighbors Switch1# show cdp neighbors gig1/0/22 detail The software release, the neighbor’s DUPLEX MODE, and POWER REQUIREMENTS that have been negotiated
Enable/Disable CDP (config)#[no] cdp run Switch(config)# interface f0/0 Switch(config-if)# [ no ] cdp enable
LLDP - IEEE 802.3ab - Information advertised by grouping attributes into TLV. example: advertise its system name in one TLV, your mngmt add in other TLV an so on. - Advertisements then become in one chain of TLV
LLDP-MED TLV - Audio-visual devices (VoIP) - Link Layer Discovery Protocol - Media Endpoint Device Type Length Value - Carry useful information link VLAN, QoS NUMBER, POWER MANAGEMENT, etc. - Supported by LLDP by default, but can't send basic and MED TLV simultaneously on a switchport. If a switch receives LLDP-MED TLVs, it will begin sending LLDP-MED TLVs.
LLDP default settings and verifying and show commands - Disabled by default #show lldp #[no]lldp run #show lldp neighbors #show lldp neighbors f0/0 detail (config-if)#int f0/0 (config-if)#[no] lldp [receive|transmit]
Describes Power over Ethernet for Cisco IP phones Provide 48v DC to a device over the UTP that is used for connectivity. The DC power is supplied by the switch itself.
Lists IEEE 802.3af PoE device classes (predetermined voltages) Power Class Maximum Power Offered 0 (default) 15.4W 1 4.0W 2 7.0W 3 15.4W 4 (802.3at) Up to 30W
Métodos PoE Cisco Inline Power ILP 7W IEEE 802.3af PoE 15.4W IEEE 802.3at PoE+ 25.5W Cisco Universal PoE UPoE 60W
PoE - Power disabled when port down - Continually try to detect a powered device - Begin supply small power. It then can measure the resistance across the pairs. If a 25K ohm is detected a power device is present.
PoE Power Classes Normally a switch will offer a maximum of 15.4W per port. With this V the device can power up a portion of its circuit. If additional power is needed, the device can inform by CDP or LLDP advertisements to request up to 30W allowed for class 4.
UPoE - Cisco Universal PoE (60W) - A device can request more than 30W of power. The device can use special TLVs with CDP or LLDP to request UPoE up to max of 60W. (Only 4500 offer UPoE)
Configuring PoE By default port can automatically detect the presence of PoE capable device before applying power. Switch(config-if)# power inline { auto | static } [ max milliwatts ] Switch(config-if)# power inline never
AUTO keyword (config poe) Connected device can request power through CDP or LLDP and the switch will attempt to deliver it, up to 30W.
STATIC keyword (config poe) Preallocate a fixed amount of power to a device
MAX keyword (config poe) Maximum amount of power to offer on the interface. from 4000 to 30000 mw (4 to 30 W)
Verifying PoE Switch# show power inline First few lines display info about the current power budget. The switch has 710.0W available for PoE; 110.4W are used, leaving 599.6W for additional PoE use.
