Why is engagement with ICT important for students? Enables students to develop a set of skills that can be used across all subject areas . ICTs saturate all areas of life so by incorporating into education we maximise the opportunities to succeed in the global world
Why is engagement with ICT important for teachers? Engagement with ICTs is vital for a teacher to expand their knowledge, enhance and support a learning environment for both teacher and students’ by enacting the national curriculum into their teaching and planning, many teachers are digital immigrants which means teachers’ have to constantly learn and update their technological skills in order to teach our digital native children. In today’s society children grow up with technology as second nature

Discuss the significance of the need to integrate ICTs into the school syllabus children need to be ready for the globalised technological world they live in. Information literacy rich classrooms promote lifelong learning enabling students to be self-directed, assume greater control of their learning, and build critical & reflective thinking.
What is computer literacy? Ability to use a computer, software, and ability to use internet collaboration tools and technology
What is information literacy? Information literacy refers to the skills required to identify the need for information, locate and evaluate information, then effectively use that information
Why is information literacy important? Promotes problem solving, thinking, question skills, seeking answers, forming opinions. Fosters successful learners and responsible citizens

How does consistency of educational practice help students in Australian schools? What are some specific examples you can think of? Helps students to build skills that will be relevant to their current and future education regardless of location The national curriculum would be one example as it makes sure all students have access to the same knowledge
What strategies should teachers use when working with indigenous students? • Make learning real and relevant, • use indigenous content, • visual processes that encourage holistic comprehension, • encourage communication and communication skills • group work • Teachers will need to scaffold the students learning around learning material that is significant and has relevance in the students’ life. • use media galleries, use hypertexts so students learn kinaesthetically (click and drag etc.), compile media, encourage communication skills • use examples of whole products. Normalising cultural diversity in classroom improves students participation and engagement. Use learning strategies that recognise indigenous ways helps student and generates enthusiasm resulting in “shining eyes, smiling faces” outcome.
Explain how 'access' impacts on indigenous use of ICT's? Access impacts on indigenous students because of location 69% of indigenous people live outside of major cities so internet access is very limited. Poverty affects access as a high percentage of indigenous persons are low income earners so cannot afford computers let alone the internet. The other factor affecting access is education attainment only 39.5% of indigenous students make it to Grade 12. The students also lack modelling in the home on ICT usage as parents do not have those skills. Lack of modelling can occur in schools too.
Explain the four main types of digital resources 1. Design and make- Design, draw, paint make and build eg. Kids Pix, Powerpoint, Tux Paint 2. Work and Play-Play, explore, investigate e.g. web quests quizzes, adventure games, discovery online websites etc 3. Communicate and share- talk send messages, through blog or wiki established through “The Learning Place” 4. On-line project- work collaboratively on and off line with students in other locations eg. Creating a wiki on “ The Learning Place’
What needs to happen to ensure students are active creators rather than passive users of technological products? In the school environment it is necessary to give young students opportunities to engage with a range of ICTs that compliment and supplement their pre-school experience so they are active creators rather than passive users
Compare and contrast digital natives and digital immigrants School students are often referred to as “digital natives” due to the presumption they have had extensive exposure to and interaction with ICTS in their home environmentmany teachers are digital immigrants which means teachers’ have to constantly learn and update their technological skills in order to teach
What does ‘creating’ with ICTs refer to? refers to the process students undertake to produce an original piece of work that has purpose and meaning
Why is it important to integrate the use of ICTs into the curriculum rather that focus on teaching ICT Skills? ICTs help students engage in their own learning. Students are immersed in ICTs everywhere. They like them and they tend to engage more in learning experiences when they can see the connections between their world and the learning.
At which point in the learning process would you teach ICT skills? ICT skills should be incorporated into the curriculum at all levels.
What is an ICT? Information Communication Technology -Hardware, Computers, phones, IPad -Software, MSOffice, Tux Paint, Bubblus -Peripheral device, Head phones, scanners etc.
What is a Cross Curriculum Priority? Specific learning areas which are considered important to all aspects of students’ current and future learnings within the education sector. There are 10 general capabilities specifically covered in the curriculum 3 examples of these are; Literacy, Numeracy and ICT.
