Question Answer
What is input energy? Energy that is applied to an object in different forms.
What is an example of this? When you apply chemical input energy from the food you digest in your body to a bicycle when riding it.
What is output energy? The resultant forms of energy produced from the input energy.
What is an example of this? When riding a bicycle the input energy you put in is turned to many forms of output energy the main one is kinetic output energy.
What is useful energy? Output energy that is used for the purpose it was applied for.
What is wasted energy? Output energy that changes into other forms of energy that are not useful or needed.
What is an example useful energy? The energy that is converted into kinetic energy when riding a bicycle.
What is an example of wasted energy? The energy that is converted to heat energy in your body when riding a bicycle.
What is energy efficiency? The measure of how much of your input energy is wasted in comparison to how much of your input energy is converted to useful energy.
How is energy efficiency calculated? By converting the number of joules for each of the different categories (useful and wasted energy) into percentages out of the total amount of input energy applied at the beginning (100%).
What are energy rating labels? A label that rates an appliance's energy efficiency by using stars (usually out of ten).
On what types of appliances are energy rating labels used? Dishwashers, washing machines and fridges.
What benefits does efficient housing usually provide? Ways to stop much energy use inside the house.
What is an example of this? Efficient housing usually provides adequate whether inside the house at all times reducing the number of times you may have to use the heater of air conditioning.
Do houses also include energy efficiency star rating? Yes, the National House Energy Rating Scheme uses computer simulations to provide energy efficiency star ratings for housing.
What are some improvements that can be made to a house's design? 1. Considering windows (their orientation, tinting, shading etc;). 2. Considering the orientation of the house itself. 3. Including coverings on windows based on their orientation. 4. Constructing the floor, walls and roof out of insulating material.
What are some other energy efficient designs that have been studied recently? LED lighting, solar cars, regenerative braking, lighter cars and magnetic refrigeration.
Whom are two people who contributed to aircraft development over time before the Wright brothers? Sir George Cayley and Jean Marie de Bris.
When did the Wright brothers release their first successful glider? In the year 1902.
What was the recorded distance that they were able to fly by 1905? The distance was 39.4 Km.
