Question Answer
*WELLBEING definition "degree of satisfaction that an individual or group experiences when their needs are met"
FACTORS AFFECTING WELLBEING Emotional --- feelings Economic --- money Cultural --- customs, beliefs, values & traditions Physical --- physical health & safety Spiritual --- moral and/or religious areas Social --- interaction w/ other people
WHY MIGHT THERE BE DIFFERENT UNDERSTANDINGS OF WELLBEING? - Different cultures/families emphasise on more wellbeing factors than others, rather than equally (resilience, past experiences & life experiences)
NEEDS AND WANTS Needs: "essential for survival and physical and mental health" Wants: "desires not necessary for survival or for the maintenance of good health"
SPECIFIC NEEDS Safety and security Health Education Sense of Identity Employment Adequate Standard of living
1. SAFETY AND SECURITY "essential desire to feel protected and safe from threat" example: house modifications (alarms)
2. HEALTH "holistic concept relating to a person's perception of wellbeing" example: balance of physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual
3. EDUCATION "acquiring knowledge and skills" example: schools, TAFE, community college higher education --> likely to access high level of economic resources --> wellbeing
4. SENSE OF IDENTITY "an individual idea of who they are" example: young person may see themselves as a good student, with a part-time job and the ability to go to UNI --> contribute to a positive sense of identity.
5. EMPLOYMENT "an activity to which one devotes time; exerting energy towards a goal for payment, profit or commision. example: for young adults, work can enhance the structures and routines established at school open new opportunities.
6. ADEQUATE STANDARD OF LIVING "primary needs - food, clothing and shelter - that are required by all" example: organisations such as Salvation Army help assist people meet these needs.
MASLOWS HIERARCHY critique and debate relevance In today's context, this model is not fitted for all individuals, as there are many people who are highly satisfied with the basic needs.
SATISFACTION OF NEEDS AND WANTS goal setting "objectives that we aim for in life" eg. a student is aiming for the top marks in all subjects. He then sets goals for each week to have past papers completed and 100%.
SATISFACTION OF NEEDS AND WANTS enhancing wellbeing When indivduals and families make progress on achieving goals, there is a reward and sense of satisfaction.
*RESOURCES definition "things people use to achieve goals"
SPECIFIC RESOURCES human "the skills, abilities or talents of people" - knowledge - language - initiative - compassion
HOW DO HUMAN RESOURCES ASSIST IN SATISFYING SPECIFIC NEEDS? eg. to assist in satisfying the specfic need of employment. Initiative to seek an occupation and knowledge on a wide range of jobs is essential.
SPECIFIC RESOURCES non-human "tangible or touchable things" - food - clothing - money - electricity
HOW DO NON-HUMAN RESOURCES ASSIST IN SATISFYING SPECIFIC NEEDS? e.g To assist in satisfying the specfic need of health, non-human resources such as food, clothing and money will greatly assist as they will ensure the physical wellbeing is good and that you are able to afford medication, services etc.
INTERCHANGEABILITY OF RESOURCES "resources have a variety of uses and individuals must decide how to best use them" eg. a teacher earns a salary and may use some MONEY to hire a cleaner. In this way, one person's money buys someone else's TIME and SKILLS. The cleaner could use her pay to meet ADEQUATE STANDARD OF LIVING or EMOTIONAL wellbeing (family vacatation)
RESOURCE SUSTAINABILITY (to conserve a resource) Effective resource management relies on people and governments to make carefully considered decisions on how to conserve a resource for long use. eg. recycling paper or ink cartidges and sending electronic files instead of printing
*FACTORS AFFECTING RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - Personal values and past experiences - Factors influencing availability of and access to resources
