Question Answer

Difference between a windows test page and a printer test page Printer test page – originates from printer and tells you that the printer itself physically works – Windows test page tells you that communicating to printer works, drivers, cabling, etc.
What can cause printed copies to come out of a laser printer too light? Prints can be too light if toner is low, fuser is blown, remove tab from toner before installing, set to draft mode or wrong paper type
Why shouldn’t an inkjet printer be powered down with a button on a power bar or surge suppressor instead of with its power button? Turn off inkjet printer from built-in power so it goes through proper parking, sealing and cleaning process

What can cause a paper jam? Paper jam can be caused by user error, not cleaning or maintenance the printer, not fanning the paper when filling it up, wrong type of paper, humidity too high or too low, pickup roller needs to be cleaned or replaced
How is paper bond weight measured? Paper bond weight is measured by ream (500 sheets) 17x22-inches
How would you clear a paper jam? Clear paper jam with form-feed button. Failing that remove paper by keeping paper going in its forward direction.
If a paper comes out and it is totally black, what has failed? Paper comes out completely black and covered in toner, primary corona has failed, did not charge paper properly so toner was attracted to entire page
What has failed if the paper comes out completely blank? The print-head (laser) has failed
What has failed if the image falls off the page? Fuser
What is the gummy sludge found in ink jet printers? ink and paper dust
How does a CDx compare with a DVDx? DVD is 9 times faster than CD
Why are some markers not good for labelling burnable media? Some markers can break down the layer of lacquer and damage the reflective coating
What is the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray? Storage size, different lasers, speed, standards
What are the 2 region codes for DVDs? Region protection code standards RPC1 and RPC2
What region code increments the registry? RPC1
What region code increments the firmware? RPC2
What are some different power/data cables connected to optical drives? USB, SCSI, PATA, SATA
How would you safely clean an optical disk? Clean optical disc with lint-free cloth in a straight line from inside to outside
What is the maximum parallel ATA cable length? Max PATA cable length is 18 inches
What is the maximum serial ATA cable length? Max SATA cable length is 1 metre
What has replaced CLV and CAV? ZCLV
What is ZCLV? The disc is divided into zones. In essence it combines the functions of CLV and CAV.
How many contacts on a SATA connector? SATA power connector has 15 contacts
What does tight tolerance mean? A tolerance in a specification that holds the permissible deviation from the specification to a minimum value. Tight tolerance is +/-5%.
What is the maximum tight tolerance in a blue wire? Tight tolerance is +/-5%, blue wire is 12V so maximum voltage is 12.6 for tight tolerance
What percentage is loose tolerance? Loose tolerance is +/-10% difference
What is the loose tolerance of a red wire? Loose tolerance is +/-10% difference, red wire is 5V so loose tolerance would be from 4.5 to 5.5V
What is the voluntary certification for efficiency in power supplies called? 80+ certification
What colour is the 3.5mm connector for a microphone? Pink
What colour is the 3.5mm connector for a line-in? Blue
What colour is the 3.5mm connector for a front speakers or headphones? Green
What colour is the 3.5mm connector for a subwoofer? Orange
What is DSP? Digital Signal Processor. A DSP is to your sound card what your GPU is to your video card?
What would cause no sound? Not connected, blown speakers, wrong driver, poor wiring, volume control
What is a Codec? Codec is a coder/decoder. It tells a program how to read certain file types such as DivX movies
If a client is looking to purchase RAM what do you need to know before advising? Physical size of RAM, type of OS, budget, voltage, speed, module type, memory time has to match
What is DDR3 1600 also known as? PC3 12800
What is DDR3 1333 also known as? PC3 10600
What is an example of memory type? DDR3, DDR2
What is an example of module type? DIMM, SODIMM
What is the standard beep code for malfunctioning or dislodged RAM? One long repeating beep
How might you test for suspected bad RAM? Test bad RAM with memtest86 or memtest86+, Windows Memory Diagnostic, POST card
Why should you avoid mixing memory and sockets with gold and tin content on it? Avoid mixing tin and gold due to threat of corrosion due to oxidization
How many pins does DDR2 have for a desktop? 204 pins
How many pins does DDR have for a desktop? 184 pins
What is a memory leak? Memory leak is when a program closes but does not return RAM back to OS
How might an administrator detect memory leak in a system? By referring to the system’s Task Manager
Is the RAM count at boot sufficient to let you know that the RAM is fine? NO
Why would the RAM not count all the way up at boot? The on-board video is borrowing/stealing some of it.
Can you mix different speeds of RAM? Yes but they’ll run at the speed of the slowest stick
What is the ESCD in a system’s bootup? ESCD is extended system configuration data, saves the last good boot-up (hardware resources, etc., as they worked the previous time)
Where is the ESCD stored? ESCD is stored in the CMOS
What does Windows 7 use instead of the BOOT.ini? Instead of BOOT.INI Windows 7 uses BCD
What are the 3 phases of product life in preventative maintenance? Infant mortality, useful life/constant failure phase, wear-out phase are the phases of life cycle, measures MTBF
What are we measuring in the constant failure phase? MTBF - Mean time between failures.
What is replacing MTBF? MTBF being replaced by AFR (annual failure rate)

What makes one power supply better than another? Number of Watts, power distribution, whether it's modular, number of connectors, whether it's certified, noise, brand, etc.
How does CLV work in an optical drive? The track moves at the same speed and the RPM varies
How does CAV work in an optical drive? RPM remains constant while the data transfer rate (DTR) varies
What is the difference between PTP and OTP in DVD technology? Opposite Track Path (OTP) accesses data from the outside to the centre of the disc while readout on Parallel Track Path (PTP) starts at the centre of the disc
What are the 7 steps in the printer process? Processing, Charging/Conditioning, Writing/Exposing, Developing, Transferring, Fusing and Cleaning
