Question Answer
Abrasion Erosion caused when loose material in the load carried by water wears away the land
Attrition Erosion caused when small stones in the load carried by water bump off one another
Backwash Water moving back and down the beach to return to the sea
Bay A curved stretch of coastline that has been eroded by waves
Compressed air Air trapped in a join or crack
Constructive Building or gathering something
Destructive Destroying or loosing something
Dredge To clean the sea or river bed by scooping out mud, weeds and litter with a dredger
Feature A distinctive attribute or aspect of something
Fetch The open area of sea across which a wave travels, the larger the fetch, the larger the wave
Headland A land area of hard rock jutting out into the sea
High-water mark A line marking the highest level reached by water at high tide
Hydraulic action Erosion caused by the power of moving water
Lagoon A shallow sea inlet cut off from the sea
Load Material transported by water e.g rivers, glaciers or the sea
Longshore drift The zigzag movement of material carried by waves across a coastline
Low-water mark A line marking the lowest level reached by water at low tide
Marram grass Grass that grows on sandy shores and can withstand drying; often planted to stabilise sand dunes
Notch An indentional or incision at a point of weakness on an edge or surface
Nourish To provide with substances necessary for growth, health and good conditions
Onshore winds Wind blowing from the sea onto land near coasts, also called a sea breeze
Retreat To go back or recede from a position
Sand bar Deposited sand and shingle that extends across and closes off a bay
Sand spit A long ridge of deposited sand or shingle joined to the coast at one end
Sea arch A tunnel that goes into and through a headland
Sea cave A tunnel into a sea cliff
Sea cliff A vertical or steep slope on the coast
Sea stack A pillar of rock formed when the roof of a sea arch collapses
Shingle A mass of small, rounded pebbles
Solution A mixture of water and the material dissolved in it
Swash The powerful movement of a breaking wave up to a beach
Tombolo A ridge of sand or shingle joining an island to the mainland
Undercut To cut or wear away the part below or under something
Wave-built terrace A terrace built up from eroded sediments on top of a wave-cut platform
