Depiction of Empress Eugenie in the Palace of Fontainebleau. After the Anglo-French expedition of the Summer Palace in 1860, spoils from this expedition were brought back to France. Many precious objects were given to her Majesty the Empress in an attempt to create a sort of "Chinese Museum"
The bronze zodiac heads looted from the Summer Palace in 1860 during the Second Opium War. Three in particular found themselves in auctions wherein representatives of designer Yves Saint Laurent purchased them. They were originally returned to China, who initially had ill feelings towards the auctioning.
