Question Answer
What is an ion? An ion is a charged atom or group of atoms.
What type of ion is formed when an electron is lost and what type is formed when an electron is gained? Losing electrons means a positive ions and gaining means negative ions as electrons are negatively charged.
What is ionic bonding and why does it happen? When a metal and a non metal are combined. It happens because both atoms want a full outer shell so that they are stable.
Why do magnesium oxide and sodium chloride have high melting points and conduct electricity when molten or in solution? The have high melting points because the oppositely charged ions are hard to overcome. Also they conduct electricity when molten or in solution because electrons are free to move about where when they are solid the ions are held in place and cannot move about which means they cannot conduct electricity.
What happens when magnesium (group 2) and oxygen (group 6) bond? Ionic bonding occurs and Mg becomes a 2+ ion because it loses electrons and Oxygen becomes a 3- ion because it gains two electrons. Note : You will have to be able to draw this in the exam. Refer to book for this.
