Functional Group The part of the molecule responsible for its chemical properties which is attached to some point on the carbon background.
Homologous Series Compounds with the following properties: -same functional group -similar chemical properties -each successive member differs by 1 carbon and 2 hydrogen atoms.
Hydrocarbons (saturated and unsaturated) Organic compounds containing carbon and hydrogen only. Saturated- with single bonds only Unsaturated- containing Carbon=Carbon double bonds
Empirical Formula The simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound.
General formula The simplest algebraic formula of a member of a homologous series.
Aliphatic alkane A hydrocarbon with carbon atoms joined together in straight or branched chains
Alicyclic Alkane Hydrocarbon with carbon atoms joined together in a ring structure.
