How has geography encouraged civilization in the Middle East? The Middle East has a great deal of land. Saudi Arabia is bigger than BC. The Red Sea is very wide. The geography is complex because the Middle East has mountains, flat land and fertile rivers.
Climate in the MIddle East In the mountains, it is dry and desert. The wettest along the coast of the Mediterranean sea get rain but not enough. In the summer, it is very hot and much of the MIddle East has a year-round growing season. It is very sunny there all year long.
Water and Agriculture in the Middle East There are rivers and oases. Thousands of years ago, many farms were by the oases so farmers could grow food.
What kinds of food grow in the Middle East Oranges, dates, figs, olives, wheat and vegetables
Precipitation rain, snow, sleet or hail
subtropics region bordering the tropics (north of the tropic of cancer)
oasis a green area in a desert region made possible by water from a spring
aquifer natural deep underground store of water
Settlement Patterns in the Middle East People lived by oases where there are farms by the water. This means they live close together which creates cities. Then there is a culture, ideas, and growth. Towns and cities have an impact on trade. Traders in the Middle East travel to buy and sell.
Who are the Arabs? They are a Semitic people. Some live in villages and towns around oases and rivers. Others live as herders and nomads in the desert land. Trading is very important to the Arabs.
Arabs and Trade They used camels to transport goods. Camels don't need a lot of water. Arabs travel in Caravans so they can buy and sell goods.
Semitic Ancient people that includes the jewish people, arabians and assyrians and phoenicians
Nomad A person who moves from place to place with the seasons
Domesticate To tame an animal for human needs
Caravan A group of traders who travel together for safety
Treaty An agreement reached by negotiation between two or more parties
