What is Cystic Fibrosis? The production of abnormally thick, sticky mucus in the singing of internal organs such as the lungs or intestines.
How is Cystic Fibrosis caused? It is a genetic disorder that is acquired at conception. It is entirely caused by a recessive gene.
What are the symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis? Persistant coughing Excessive Sweating Large appetite, but no weight gain Salty Skin
What are the chances of getting Cystic Fibrosis? Both parents must be a carrier of the gene for a child to be born with it. There is a 25% chance of having the condition. 50% chance of being a carrier of the gene and a 25% chance of not being affected.
What medications can be used for treating Cystic Fibrosis? Bronchodilators: Widens airways to help with breathing Antibiotics: Fight infections in the lungs, in the form of tablets, IV, nebuliser Steroids: Reduce the swelling in the airways to help with breathing. Nasal drops to help with nasal polyps.
How does exercise help with Cystic Fibrosis? It helps to break the mucus around the organs to break up. Stretching helps to move the muscles and joints to loosen them .
What different treatments using oxygen are there for a sufferer of Cystic Fibrosis? Oxygen therapy - using an oxygen mask to help with the breathing. however it can be expensive but it can be used at home or in hospital. However the NHS can pay if it is severe enough.
What is hypoxia? A condition that involves a reduced oxygen supply.
What complications are there from Hypoxia? Pulumonary hypertension
How does Cystic Fibrosis affect someones physical development? Limited Strength Coughing fits Tiredness Miss milestones in early development Underweight
How does Cystic Fibrosis affect someones Intellectual development? Too tired to do school work so miss out on lessons Missing school to go to hospital appointments Restrictions on career options
What affect does Cystic Fibrosis have on someones Social development? Miss School - find it hard to make friends Cant join in leisure activities Suffer from bullying May be avoided from others Have to catch up on work so can't see friends
What is the affect on someones emotional development who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis? Stressed Tiredness Social isolation Lack of confidence Lacking motivation Scared very dependant on others Guilty for being a burden on family
What is the financial affect on a suffer of Cystic Fibrosis ? Travel costs for the regular hospital appointments Petrol costs Oxygen tanks Parents may have to give up work to look after them Adaptations to the home to make it easier
Where can sufferers of Cystic Fibrosis get financial support? General Welfare fund - helps towards household costs Further Education Grants
