Deception | The act of manipulating the truth by hiding truthful information or showing false information. Can be good or evil. |
Benevolent Deception | When it helps rather than harm the end-users. Can be intentional or not, implicit or explicit, acknowledged or not. |
Why benevolent deception happens? | To balance the demands and constraints imposed by system capabilities, end-user expectations and business objectives. |
User Expectation vs. System Reality | E.g., hide uncertainty, maintain consistence, increase people's comfort, etc... |
Individual vs. Group | E.g., obscure information, display fake information to hide real data, etc... |
Individual vs. Self | E.g., help users avoid mistakes, help users achieve their goals, help users make decisions, etc... |

System Image Deceptions | Around what the system is doing or around what the system can do. |
Behaviour Deceptions | Deceptions that take advantage of the physical, sensory and psychological limits, capabilities and learned behaviours of the user. |
Mental Model Deception | Deceptions that manipulate users’ mental mode or perception of the system, by using metaphors to draw upon what the users are familiar with. |
Malevolent Deception | Deception intended to benefit the system owner at the expense of the user. |
