Question Answer
what are the self help charities in Kibera? Practical Action Linda's Group KIN
what is the definition of a squatter settlement? where people too poor to rent a flat or any kind of home, (squatters), build their own homes on unused land, (normally marginal land)
why do squatter settlements develop? usually because of rapid rural-urban migration. people move from the countryside into the towns and cities with not enough money, no jobs, and no place to stay
what is the informal sector? where people informally work or make work for themselves (leather tanning, making pots, recycling)
where is Kibera? in the city Nairobi, in Kenya, south of the city's CBD
how many people live in Kibera? between 800,000 and 1 million (over 30% of Nairobi's inhabitants) squatters only have 1M2 of space each
what does the extremely dense population result in? very quick spread of diseases such as HIV, and cholera, and squatters have just 1M2 of room
how many children in Kibera are thought to be orphans? 100,000 children
define Practical Action a British self help charity, that helps squatters by developing low costing roofing tiles(made from sand, clay), blocks for building that are cheaper than concrete (made from soil and added lime and natural fibre). they also teach squatters how to build their houses. this means that they can repair their homes and also possibly make a living out of building
define KIN KIN (Kibera in Need), provides education for children, encourages squatters to work together , supports the informal sector and has created groups such as Linda's self help group
define Linda's self help group a group set up by KIN, that gives children a good full meal once a week in Kibera
what are the disadvantages of self help schemes? squatters still live in an unhealthy environment
give an example of a Local Authority scheme UN-Habitat (united nation's human settlement program)
what do UN-Habitat do to help? they build blocks of flats, supplied with electricity and flushing toilets and running water. squatters are moved to these flats for better accommodation.
what are the disadvantages of local authority schemes? residents have to pay a higher rent to live in the flats than in Kibera. residents are not allowed to work in the informal sector (because of lack of qualifications/skill they may not be able to get any other jobs, resulting in them moving back to the shanty town)
what are the other words for "squatter settlement"? shanty town
