Question Answer
What Is Photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make their own food. This needs light, carbon dioxide and water. It produces glucose, and oxygen as a by-product.
Why are chloroplasts green? They contain a green pigment called chlorophyll
Why do cells near the top of the leaf always have a large number of chloroplasts? So that they can absorb a lot of sunlight for photosynthesis.
Why don't root hair cells have chloroplast? Being far away from the sun, they do not take part in photosynthesis.
What are water and carbon dioxide also known as? Reactants.
What is the simple word equation for photosynthesis? carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen
Where does photosynthesis take place? (IN DETAIL) Photosynthesis takes place inside plant cells in small objects called chloroplasts. Chloroplasts contain a green substance called chlorophyll. This absorbs the light energy needed to make photosynthesis happen. Plants and algae can only carry out photosynthesis in the light.
What is respiration? The oxygen produced is released into the air from the leaves. The glucose produced can be turned into other substances, such as starch and plant oils, which are used as an energy store. This energy can be released by respiration.
