What makes an element an element?	Elements are made up of only one kind of atom
The properties of a solid...	particles are densely packed and have strong forces (vibrate)

What is diffusion	when a substance moves from an area of high concentration into an area of low concentration
What is distillation?	the process of heating a mixture (with a liquid) to separate two elements by evaporating the other
What are sub-atomic particles?	protons, neutrons, electrons (particles found in an atom)
what are isotopes?	atoms of the same element but with different numbers of neutrons
what defines a "noble element"	an element with a full shell of electrons (1st shell = 2 electrons 2nd shell = 8 electrons)
When is an ionic bond most likely to occur?	When the elements are further away from one another on the periodic table of elements
What is osmosis?	the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules through a semi-permeable membrane into a region of higher solute concentration, in the direction that tends to equalize the solute concentrations on the two sides
