What is the difference between IDS and IPS? | IDS (Intrusion Detection System) - Used to send notifications of threats which may have entered the network to the admin for review, by analysing the transmissions across the network. An IDS doesn't do anything to physically protect against threats. IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) - Functions in the same area of the network as a firewall, and monitors traffic flowing through the network to prevent against malware. The IPS has features similar to the IDS, but also works to physically protect the network opposed to just notifying an admin of a breach. |
