Question Answer
How do we determine which innovations are worth scaling? An Innovation Coach will be able to observe each classroom extensively to find weaknesses and strengths. Where there are weaknesses school-wide, the Innovation Coach will match a strength. That innovation could be scaled.
What do we do about teachers who do not want to change? The Innovation Coach will have the time to create a relationship and find at least one area where that teacher is struggling. The Innovation Coach can spend time supporting and motivating that teacher, OUTSIDE of the evaluation process.
How will you build in time for sharing of innovations and implementation? The Innovation Coach will be able to act as a substitute for teachers to observe one another. The Innovation Coach will be able to meet with teachers. They will have time to support teachers in implementation and time to observe classrooms.
How do you motivate teachers to share their innovations in Professional Development or small groups? There is no incentive or motivation to share. The Innovation Coach will act as a support person to those who have been chosen to share their innovations. They will make copies, set-up activities, and other logistics. They will help plan what the PD might look like and support teachers in confidence. Teachers won't be alone to do this.
In this high-stakes evaluation world, how do we encourage teachers to take risks in trying something new? The Innovation Coach will NOT be associated with the evaluation system for the school. Teachers will not feel like they have to perform for evaluation for this Coach. If the observation flops, it doesn't create a bad mark on that teacher's eval. The Coach will also have time to build a relationship.
