What is Law? Criminal Law Civil Law Law - is the set of rules that govern our behavior. Law affects everyone. Criminal law - prohibits and punishes certain conduct for the benefit of society Civil law - concerns the private rights and duties of individuals who live within a society.
Sources of Law Governments #1 Governments create laws. In the U.S., governments are constitutional, which means a constitution adopted by the people creates a government and gives that government the power to adopt laws governing the people
Sources of Law Governments #2 Federal Government - created by the U.S. Constitution State Government - created by state constitution Local Government - created by states under the authority of state constitutions. All three levels of government - federal state, and local - make laws. The U.S. government has 3 branches - legislative, executive, and judicial. Each branch makes laws.
