Question Answer
Popular Recreation (SCOWL CORN) Societal Factors
Simple Rules The majority of the lower class people were illiterate, so there was a lack of rules e.g. mob football-can't kill.
Cruel/Violent Events took place in the centre of villages usually around a pub (alcohol+big crowds encouraged rowdy behaviour) reflected the nature of society+harsh conditions that were faced e.g. events such as shin kicking and bare knuckle fighting encouraged violence.
Occupational People who were talented were picked up by local farmers, so they had the edge on opponents they would face e.g. talented cricketers could secure work on a family farm for achieving success against rivals.
Wagering The wealthy people would bet to show off their wealth, whilst the poor would bet to try and achieve the rags to riches dream.
Local Lack of transport e.g. only some people would have been able to afford cars.
Courtly/Popular Two class society, feudal system. Courtly- for the wealthy Popular- for the masses
Occasional Due to the social status of most of the participants (lower class-farmers) there participation was seasonal e.g. during harvest they would be too busy to take part, but in the winter during poor light they would be free to take part. Also holy days and holidays e.g. Shrove Tuesday+New year
Rural Lots of green, open farmland for events to take place on, lack of industry e.g. a stretch of farmland could be used as a cricket pitch.
Natural/Simple No equipment/specialist facilities e.g. mob football-no pitch, swimming would take place in lakes. EXCEPTION-real tennis for the upper class had courts and equipment.
