Proclamation of 1763 A law forbidding English colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. This happened after the French & Indian war.
"Taxation Without Representation" A major cause of the American Revolution that have to pay taxes but no one representing your interests.
Intolerable (Coercive) Acts A series of laws passed in 1774 to punish Boston for the Tea Party.
Quartering Act A law passed by British Parliament that forced colonists to provide for British soldiers (food, transportation, bed etc.)
Townshend Acts Laws passed in 1776 that taxed goods like glass, paper, paint, lead and tea.
Sons of Liberty Patriots that revolted against British tax laws; came up with tar & feathering tax collectors
Tar & Feathering: What colonists did (or threatened to do) to tax collectors because they disliked them so much. This was when hot tar was poured on the British tax collector and he was covered in feathers.
Writs of Assistance A legal document allowed British customs officials to inspect a ship's cargo without giving assistance.
Stamp Act A law made in 1765 that placed duties on legal documents and taxed newspapers, letters, almanacs etc. These types of documents all had to have stamps.
Boycott To withdraw from commercial or social relations with a country or organization as a punishment to protest.
Petition A written request appealing to authority because of a particular cause; usually signed by many people.
Loyalists People who remain loyal to their government especially in the face of a revolt. (FIGHT FOR ENGLAND)
Patriots People who vigorously supported their country and were prepared to fight for it against enemies (FIGHT FOR AMERICA)
Boston Massacre A riot on March 5, 1770 taking place in Boston between British troops and colonists in which the troops fired at a mob, killing 5 people and injuring 6.
Boston Tea Party In 1773 citizens dresses up as Indians and raided 3 British, dumping hundreds of chests of tea in protest to the tea act.
Committee of Correspondence Organization created by Samuel Adams and the Patriots to keep colonists anticolonial actions and plan colonial resistance.
Declaration of Independence The document recording the proclamation of the second continental congress on July 4, 1776 that asserted freedom and independence.
Enlightenment A philosophical and intellectual movement emphasizing reason and individualism rather than tradition and just believing things happen for no reason.
Natural Rights Rights that exist not due to laws, customs, or beliefs of any particular culture or government (all humans entitled to.)
Treaty of Paris September 3, 1778 ended the Revolutionary War between the United States and Great Britain.
