Question Answer
Blue Monday The third Monday in January is already known as Blue Monday or the gloomiest day of the year.
Origin Blue Monday originated in 2005 when Cliff Arnall, a professor at Cardiff University's School of Psychology, announced that he had found the mathematical formula to determine the saddest day of the year.
Marketing campaign In 2005, Sky Travel tried to find a way to increase its sales. So it hired Cliff Arnall, who came up with the formula.
The formula [W + (Dd)] xTQ / MxNA]. The factors including: weather (W), level of debt (D), monthly salary (d), time elapsed since Christmas (T), how long a person has failed to keep their New Year’s resolutions (Q), motivational levels (M), and need to take action(NA).
The variables involved in the formula are subjective and clearly not scientific. The formula cannot be properly evaluated and verified. There is no way to measure “time since failure to keep New Year’s resolution” for every single person on the planet, and January weather is vastly different among countries and continents.
Blue Monday is a myth Although the external conditions of the so-called Blue Monday may trigger a more noticeable dip in mood, there are no studies that claim that it is indeed the saddest day of the year.
Tips if you are feeling sad It's important not to confuse feeling low with depression. You can use some tips for better mental health.
Exercise Exercise releases endorphins and happy chemicals. It doesn't have to be exercise in the gym. It is simply a matter of increasing physical activity.
Assess your New Year's resolutions A lot of people fail their New Year's resolutions within two or three weeks. But if you have failed, look at why and use that as a learning experience. You can still work towards a goal for the year and not beat themselves up about it.
Volunteering One reason people love Christmas isn't necessarily the receiving, but the pleasure they get from helping people. This can be a good way to get a happy boost with no financial implications.
