Aerobic [ˌɛr.oʊˈ.bɪk] Aeróbico It means involving, needing, or relating to oxygen. Aerobic can be related to physical exercise, especially designed to improve the function of the heart and lungs. - Aerobic activity exercises and strengthens your heart and lungs.
Centenarians [ˌsɛn.təˈnɛr.i.ənz] centenarios y centenarias People who are a hundred years old or more. - Although most centenarians have passed through many tough situations, all of them embrace life and live longer than the average population.
Characteristic [ˌkɛr.ɪk.təˈr.ɪs.tɪk] Característica Meaning a typical feature or quality that something or somebody has. - Positivism and adaptability are two characteristics that centenarians commonly share.
Diphtheria [dɪf.ˈθɪr.iə] Difteria Diphtheria is a serious infectious disease that causes fever and difficulty in breathing and swallowing. - The singer was diagnosed with Diphtheria after she presented swollen glands.
Foster [ˈfɑstɚ] Fomentar, promover. It is to encourage something to develop. - Fostering a good friendship is a hard task because strong bonds require time, patience and tolerance from all the parts involved.
Inner-ear disorder [ˌɪ.nər ˈɪr.dɪs.ˈɔːr.dər] Trastorno del oído interno Disorders of the inner ear that causes severe dizziness, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, and a feeling of fullness or congestion in the ear. -There are different kinds of inner-ear disorders but most of them cause a sensation of vertigo.
Isolation [ˌɑɪ.səlˈeɪ.ʃən] Aislamiento Isolation is the state of feeling alone and without friends or help. - Some elderly people live in isolation; therefore, they may have difficulties when it comes to find help and services.
Mood swing [ˈmud.swɪŋ] Cambio de humor It is a sharp and inexplicable change in mood. - Bipolar disorder is characterized by mood swings; for instance, someone can be angry shortly after feeling happy.
Osteoporosis [ˌɔs.ti.oʊ.pəˈ.roʊ.sɪs] Osteoporosis It is a condition in which the bones become weak and are easily broken, usually when people get older or because they do not eat enough of certain substances. - Some older women have a high fracture risk when doing any kind of activity due to osteoporosis.
Papillomavirus [ˌpæpəˈloʊməˌvɑɪrəs] Virus del papiloma humano It is any of several viruses of the family Papovaviridae, containing circular DNA, causing papillomas in various animals and responsible for human genital warts. - Nowadays, people can avoid Papillomavirus by having a responsible sexual life and getting vaccinated.
Pertussis [pɚtʌ.sɪs] Tos ferina It is a disease, especially of children, that makes them cough and have difficulty breathing. - I brought my niece to the clinic where she was quickly diagnosed with Pertussis, a very contagious disease that usually affects young children.
Pervasive [pɚˈveɪ.sɪv] Dominante, generalizado Something that is present or noticeable in every part of a thing or place. - Strong connection with nature is a pervasive characteristic of all centenarians.
Poultry [ˈpoʊl.tri] Aves de corral Chickens, ducks and geese kept for their meat or eggs are called poultry. - My grandmother Angela keeps poultry in her backyard because she likes chickens.
Rickets [ˈrɪk.ɪts] Raquitismo Rickets is a disease caused by a lack of good food (source of vitamin D) that makes the bones become soft and badly formed, especially in the legs. - A child with vitamin D deficiency can suffer from rickets and, consequently, be unable to walk correctly.
Shingles [ˈʃɪŋ.gəlz] La culebrilla o herpes zóster It is a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus by reactivated virus in an older person, characterized by skin eruptions and pain along the course of involved sensory nerves. - Suffering from shingles causes severe pain because it affects nerves and provokes skin eruptions.
Stave off [ˌsteɪ.ˈvɑf] Prevenir o retrasar It means to prevent something bad from affecting someone or something for a period of time; to delay something. - I am getting vaccinated so as to stave off the flu because I want to stay healthy as much as I can.
Thread [θrɛːd] Hilo conector It is an idea or a feature that is part of something greater; an idea that connects the different parts of something - All diseases share a common thread; affect body functions and human life.
Trigger [ˈtrɪɡ.ɚ] Desencadenar It refers to an event or situation, etc. that causes something to start. - Social media can trigger eating disorders in young people.
EXTRA PHRASE AND WORD The following are an extra phrase and word that caught my attention so I decided to research about them...
Slog it out [ˌslɑ.gə.rˈɑʊt] Equivalent idiom in Spanish: “Convertirse en la última Coca Cola en el desierto.” If two or more people slog it out, they work very hard to try to be the one who is successful or who has their ideas and wishes accepted. -We do not have to slog it out to achieve our goals at work; we can just try our best and work as a team instead.
Fraught [frɔːt] tenso(a), difícil A situation or action is fraught, when it is worrying or difficult. - Teaching children about healthy habits to avoid serious diseases can provoke fraught conversations in which they could get scared or confused.
