The 'cultural' factors Gender - Many woman's sports are taken less seriously than men's Age - in some sports it is good to get involved early, however some have age restrictions e.g. Great North Run Race - Some activities are influenced by ethnic background i.e. Fewer black tennis players Disability - Resources and opportunities for disabled people are increasing at top level i.e. Team GB Paralympics
The 'health and well being' factors Illness - Prevents people from participating in sports Health problems - Such as asthma can prevent people from participating in certain sports i.e. continuous exercise
The 'image' factors Fashion - Some brands of sports equipment can be fashionable but also expensive, however many are influenced by this enough to buy it Media coverage - This can increase the popularity of some sports and many are influenced by watching it on their TVs
The 'resources' factors. Location - Many are put off by the area the resources are in Access - Others are put off by the distance they have to travel to get to the resources Time - Being open at the right time also is a key factor Availability - Resources and facilities have to available for people to participate
The 'people' factors. Family - Children often take part in the same sports as their parents and support the same team Peers - friends make it easier to succeed and continue with the sport if you have support from peers Role models - These people may inspire you to take part in their sport, because you want to be like them
The 'socio economic' factors Cost - If you can't afford to take part in a sport such as polo. Status - The socio economic background may influence their involvement in certain sports

Sports participation pyramid (Bottom to top) 1) Foundation 2) Participation 3) Performance 4) Elite
Foundation Bottom of pyramid. Learn and experience basic sporting skills. Eg, PE lessons.
Participation Second bottom of pyramid. Taking part in their free time on a regular basis. Eg, Extra curricular clubs or sports clubs outside of school.
Performance Second top of pyramid. Moving up to a higher level with more specialised coaching and enters local competitions.
Elite Top of pyramid. Top class, representative level at county, regional, national and international levels.
