Question Answer
Parts of the cell theory 1. All cells come from existing cells 2. All organisms are made of one or more cell 3. The cell is the basic unit of all living things
How do you calculate the total magnification of something with a microscope? Total Magnification= Eyepiece(10x) X Objective (# on objective lens)
How did people first find out about cells? Robert Hooke used a microscope to look at a piece of cork (Plant Cell) and he noticed it was made of boxy things and he called them cells
Why did Robert Hooke call cells "cells"? The cells were boxy and reminded him of a monk's room called a cell
Name the orgnelles in both the pant and animal cell (12) Nucleus, Nucleolus, Nuclear Membrane, Chromosomes, DNA, Ribosomes, Vauole, Mitochondria, E.R. , Cytoplasm, Lysosomes, Golgi (Body, Complex, or Apparatus)
What are the 2 organelles in the plant cell but not in the animal cell? Chloroplast and Cell Wall
Function of the Cell Wall Protect and support the cell
Function of the Cell Membrane Allows things to go in and out of the cell
Function of the Mitochondria Uses oxygen to make sugar into ATP energy
Function of Ribosomes Makes protein
Function of Lysosomes Cleans up and destroys old parts
Function of the Nucleus Controls the cells activities ( the brain of the cell)
Function of Golgi Body/Complex/Apparatus Makes simple molecules more complex then ships them out of the cell or stores them for later
Function of Endoplasmic Reticulum Transports molecules around the cell
Function of Chloroplast Uses carbon Dioxide gas and energy from sunlight to make food(sugar) for the cell
What is Passive transport? A prcoess of transporting materials in and out of the cell that does not require energy
What are the 2 types of Passive Transport? Diffusion and Osmosis
What is Diffusion? Materials travel from high concentration to low concentration in and out of the cell
What is Osmosis? A type of diffusion that happens only with water molecules
What is Active Transport? A process of transporting materials from low to high concentration in and out of the cell that requires the use of energy
What are the 2 types of Active Transport? Endocytosis and Exocytosis
What is Endocytosis? When large particles enter the cell
What is Exocytosis? When large particles leave the cell
What is a vesicle? A sac formed from peices of cell membrane
What is Photosynthesis? A process in which plants, algae, and some bacteria use the sun's energy , carbon dioxide and water to make food
What is Cellular Respiration? The process of creating energy from food in a cell
What are the raw materials and products of Photosynthesis? Raw materials: LIght energy, carbon dioxide, water Products: Sugar and oxygen
What are the raw materials and products of Cellular Respiration? Raw Materials: Sugar and oxygen Products:Carbon dioxide, water, and energy
What is the equation for Photosynthesis? 6CO2 +6H2O +light =C6H12O6 + 6O2
Whatt is the equation for Cellular Respiration? C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6H2O + 6CO2 + ATP energy
If a cell was placed in an area of equal water concetration what would happen? The cell would not do anything because the cell always needs to be at equilibrium (the area and the cell have the same water concetration) and it already would be at equilibrium
If a cell was placed in an area of high water concentration what would happen? The cell would absorb the water until it reaches the same amount of water concentration as the area around it (equilibrium)
If a cell was placed in an area of low concetration what would happen? The cell would release water until the area around it reaches the same water concetration as in the cell (equilibrium)
What are the phases of Mitosis in order?(6) Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, and Cytokenesis
What happens in Interphase? The cell is in the resting phase it doubles/ copies chromosomes and gets ready for division
What happens in prophase? Nucleolus and Nuclear M. disapear;centrioles appear; spindle fibers stretch across the cell; chromosome pairs become visible (attached by centromere)
What happens in Metaphase? Chromosome pairs line up at the equator; chromosomes attach to the spindle fibers at the centromere
What happens in Anaphase? Chromosome pairs seperate and move to oppostie ends of the cell
What happens in Telophase? 2 new nuclei form; chromosomes change to chromatain (threads not rods); mitosis ends
What happens in cytokenesis? Cytoplasm seperates and 2 new cells form; different in plant and animal cells Plants: Cell wall forms down middle Animal: Cell Membraane pinches in
What are the stages of the Cell Cycle in order? Interphase, Mitosis, and Cytokenesis
