Question Answer
What is the definition of anatomy? Anatomy deals with the form and structure of body parts- what things look like and where they are
Define Physiology. Physiology deals with the function of the body and it's parts- how things work and what they do
Define microscopic anatomy. Microscopic anatomy deals with the structures that we cannot see without a microscope.
Define macroscopic anatomy. What is another word for it? Macroscopic anatomy deals with the body and parts that can be seen with the unaided eye. This includes organs, muscles and tissue. Another word for macroscopic anatomy is gross anatomy.
Define submicroscopic anatomy. Submicroscopic anatomy is smaller than microscopic anatomy and is used to explain what is happening at the microscopic and macroscopic anatomic level. This includes ions, chemicals and cell organelles.
Define regional anatomy. To study anatomy within specific regions of the body. This would include the cells, tissue, blood vessels, muscels and organs.
What is the problem with regional anatomy? The body is not easily subdivided into specific regions and some parts may over lap.
Define systematic anatomy. Systematic anatomy is the study of systems of the body.
What is the skeletal system? Bones and joints
What is the integumentary system? The system includes hooves, nails, hair, skin and exocrine glands. First line of defence against pathogens.
What is the nervous system? The nervous system includes the central and peripheral nervous systems.
What is the cardiovascular system? The cardiovascular system includes the heart and blood vessels.
What is the respiratory system? The respiratory system includes the lungs and the air passage way.
What does the muscular system include? The muscular system includes the smooth, cardiac and skeletal muscles.
What is the sensory system? The organs of general and special sense, such as the nose.
What is the endocrine system? The endocrine system includes the glands and hormones. It secretes hormones directly into the blood to maintain homeostasis.
What is the urinary system include? The urinary system includes the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and the urethra.
What are anatomical planes? Planes are imaginary slices that are the basis of anatomical terminology and can also be used as points of reference to indicate specific body parts.
What are the four anatomical reference planes? What angle do they connect at? The four anatomical reference planes are saggital, medial, dorsal and transverse. They are all at right angles of each other.
The sagittal plane is a plane that runs the length of the body and divides it into left and right parts that are not necessarily equal.
sagittal plane- note that the division is unequal
What is a median plane? What is it also known as? A median plane is a special kind of sagittal plane that runs down the centre of the body length wise and divides the body into equal left and right parts. It is also known as the midsagittal plane.
Midsaggital plane
What is the transverse plane? The transverse plane is a plane across the body that divides it into the cranial (head-end) and cadual (tail-end) parts that may not be equal.
What parts does the transverse plane divide the body into? cranial and cadual
D is the transverse plane
What is the dorsal plane? The dorsal plane divides the body into dorsal (towards the back) and ventral (towards the belly) parts that are not necessarily equal.
dorsal plane
What is the dorsal plane also called? The frontal plane
What does cranial mean? Towards the head
What does cadual mean? towards the tail
What is the animal equivalent to superior? cranial
What is the animal equivalent to inferior? cadual
What does rostral mean? Rostral means towards the tip of the nose
What does dorsal mean? Dorsal means towards the back of the animal (top surface).
What does ventral mean? ventral means towards the belly of the animal
What is the human equivalent for ventral? anterior
What is the human equivalent for dorsal? posterior
What does medial mean? Medial means towards the median plane
What does lateral mean? lateral means away from the median plane
What does deep mean? Deep means towards the centre of the body
What does superficial mean? Superficial means towards the surface of the body
What is the human equivalent of deep? internal
What is the human equivalent of superficial? external
What does proximal mean? Proximal means towards the body
What does distal mean? Distal means away from the body
What is the carpus? The carpus is the proximal and distal dividing line for the front legs
What is the tarsus? The tarsus is the proximal and distal dividing line for the back legs
What is the human equivalent to the carpus? the wrist
What is the human equivalent to the tarsus? the ankle
What is palmar? The palmar is the back surface of the front legs that is distal to the carpus
What is the plantar? It is the back of the hind legs distal to the tarsus.
What is the human equivalent of the palmar? the palm of the hand
What is the human equivalent to the plantar? The sole of the foot
What is bilateral symmetry? Bilateral symmetry means that the right side and left side of the body are exact mirror images.
