Question Answer
What are the 3 kinematics equations? v = u + at s = ut + 1/2at² v² = u² + 2as
What is the definition of free fall? The motion of an object undergoing and acceleration of 'g'.
What is velocity equal to? Change in displacement / time taken
What is acceleration equal to? Change in velocity / time taken
What is distance travelled equal to? Average speed x time (it is equal to the area under a speed-time graph)
What are the main advantages of data-loggers? The data is more accurate - don't have to allow for human reaction times. Automatic systems have a much higher sampling rate than humans. You can see the data displayed in real time.
How do you calculate acceleration from a velocity-time graph? It is the gradient of the graph
What is weight equal to? mass x gravitational field force (W = mg)
What is density equal to? mass / volume
What is meant by the centre of gravity of an object? The single point that you can consider its whole weight to act through. The object will aways be balanced around this point.
State Newton's first law of motion. The velocity of an object will remain constant unless a resultant force acts on it.
State Newton's second law and its equation. The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the magnitude of the net force acting on the object, it acts in the direction of the mass of the net force and is inversely proportional to the mass of the object. Resultant force (N) = mass (kg) x acceleration (ms⁻²) or (F = ma)
State Newton's third law of motion. If object A exerts a force on object B, then object B exerts an equal and opposite force on object A.
What is stopping distance equal to? Thinking distance + Braking distance
What is the difference between Scalar quantity and Vector quantity? Give examples Scalar - Has no direction. Mass, temperature, time, length, speed, energy. Vector - Has magnitude and direction. Displacement, force, velocity, acceleration, momentum.
