Question Answer
what is intraspecific competition? the competition that occurs between members of the same species
what is interspecific competition? The competition that occurs between members of different species
What is meant by the term abiotic factor? A non-living factor within an ecosystem
What is meant by a biotic factor? Living factors in an ecosystem
What is meant by community? Populations of all the different species
What is a population? All the organisms of one species in a habitat
What is a species? A group of similar organisms that can reproduce to give fertile offspring
What is meant by birth rate? The number of live births per year per 1000 people in the population
What is meant by death rate? The number of people that die each year per 1000 people in the population
What is meant by life expectancy? The age at which someone born into the population is expected to live to
What is meant by population growth rate? How much the population increases or decreases by each year
What is shown by a survival curve? Shows the percentage of all individuals that were born in a population and are still alive at a given age
How would the mark-release-recapture technique be used in estimating population size A sample would be caught and marked in a harmless way e.g...... and then released a second sample would then be caught and the marked would be counted the population size can then be estimated by: number in sample 1 x number in sample 2 /number marked in sample 2
How can a graph be used to calculate the amount of quadrats needed below optimum point - too few as number of species still rising above optimum point - total number of species has levelled so no need for extra effort
how should quadrats be used they should be distributed randomly to avoid bias
what can be seen from a growth curve? shows if the population is increasing or decreasing at a given time
what does an age-population pyramid show? shows how many males and females there are in different age groups in a population
what is the equation for population growth rate? birth rate - death rate (/1000 x100)
