Question Answer
"Napoleon lead them back to the store-shed..." "Napoleon sent for..."X2 Implies that Napoleon will take over from Old Major as leader of the animals. The repetition of "Napoleon sent for" implies that he already has the characteristics of a dictatorial leader.
"Napoleon was a large rather fierce looking Berkshire boar... not much of a talker but with a reputation for getting his own way." The author hints that the animals should be wary of Napoleon. This quote also foreshadows the brutal way he will seize power.
"Only Napoleon... windmill from the start... he lifted his leg..." This highlights that Napoleon wants to reassert his leadership and undermine Snowball. It also foreshadows that he will get rid of Snowball.
"Napoleon... uttered a high-pitched whimper... At this there was a terrible baying sound outside, and nine enormous dogs wearing brass-studded collars came bounding into the barn. They dashed straight for Snowball, who only sprang from his space just in time to escape their snapping jaws." Napoleon has vicious dogs for bodyguards.
"Silent and terrified, the animals crept back into the barn" This highlights that Napoleon scared the animals. The word 'silent' is effective because suggests that the animals are scared to talk. The word 'crept' suggests that the animals were scared and did not want to be noticed by Napoleon. The word 'terrified' suggests that the animals were very scared of Napoleon and felt intimidated by him.
"Surely, comrades, you do not want Jones back?" This rhetorical question highlights that Napoleon keeps reminding the animals that their lives on the farm are better under his leadership than they were when Mr Jones owned the farm. He is also threatening the animals with the return of Mr Jones if they do not do what he says
"Animal Farm, Animal Farm, Never through me shalt thou come to harm" This is ironic because in the next chapter Napoleon orders the execution of innocent animals and takes Boxer to the knackers to be made into glue in return for money for his own personal gain.
"Napoleon acted swiftly and ruthlessly." Napoleon has become a dictator, breaking Major's instructions that "no animal must ever tyrannise over his own kind" and "No animal must ever kill any other animal."
