Question Answer
Realism realism is a literary technique practiced by many schools of writing. Although strictly speaking, realism is a technique, it also denotes a particular kind of subject matter, especially the representation of middle-class life.
Narrative techniques Narrative techniques are the methods that writers use to give certain artistic and emotional effects to a story. Although the term gets used loosely in everyday speech to talk about narrative, a “story” is just a sequence of events in time.
Use of direct or indirect speech Quoting or reporting spoken words. Makes the character come alive. We can “hear” the way s/he speaks – the actual vocab, grammar and tones.
Litotes Deliberate understatement. Shows just how strong the emotion is and illustrates something of the character of the speaker/writer.
Euphemism Use of a less objectionable or harsh expression to avoid upsetting or offending people.
Emotive Language Choice of words which have specifically intended emotional effects or are intended to evoke an emotional response in the reader.
Literary Genre A literary genre is a category of literary composition. Genres may be determined by literary technique, tone, content, or even length. The distinctions between genres and categories are flexible and loosely defined, often with subgroups.
Form The "shape" or organisational mode of a particular poem. The form consists of a set number of lines, a set rhyme scheme, and a set meter for each line.
Critical reading Careful analysis of an essay's structure and logic in order to determine the validity of an argument.
Critical Lens Essay A critical lens essay is a type of analytical essay that focuses on a quotation from a piece of literature. The essay states whether the quotation is valid, and explains why using literary devices. It is an analysis of the quote and uses literary elements and techniques to do so.
Narrative Technique omniscent narrator the voice in which a story is written that is outside the story and that knows everything about the characters and events in the story
Narrative Technique Personified narrator The definition of a personified narrator is the person telling an audience what the characters in a story are thinking and feeling.
Text can generally be understood to be poetic features, devices and language that make up a poem - these help to communicate a message, create and atmosphere.
Context covers the external influences, including historical moments, location and surroundings.
Ideology In the context of narrative fiction, ideology may be defined as the frame of values informing the narrative. This frame installs hierarchical relationships between pairs of oppositional terms such as real vs. false, good vs. bad, and beautiful vs. ugly.
