Retribution getting even with the person who has committed a crime. it is getting revenge and giving them what they deserve e.g. Death penelty
Deterrence putting people off committing crimes by having consequences e.g. Fines
Reformation to change some ones behavior for the better and help them to change their attitude e.g. Therapy, community service
Vindication offenders must be punished to show that the law is right and must be respected at all times e.g. Fines, bands, prision
Reparation designed to help the offender give something back to the community and wider society e.g. community service
