Define MST: The learning and implementation of cognitive behavioral techniques to assist sports participants in the development of mental skills to assess, monitor and adjust their thoughts and feelings to achieve performance success and personal well-being.
What is the difference between a Mental Technique, Mental Skills and Mental Qualities? And how are these related to MST? MT- Goal-Setting, Self-Talk. MS- Arousal Control, Attentional Control. MQ- Burnout, Anxiety, Vitality, Autonomous Motivation. In MST programs we aim to teach MT, to develop the athletes MS and thus enhance there MQ's.
What factors do Williams and Krane 2001 believe need to be tailored to the individual athlete to attain the athletes psychological needs: Goal Setting, Arousal Management Techniques, Coping Strategies, Imagery, Thought Control Strategies, Competitive Plans and Routines.
How effective did Fournier, Calmels, Durand-Bash and Salmela 2005 find a 10 month MST intervention was on 12 year old gymnasts? They found the MST improved difficulty of routines, quality of execution. The combined effect improved national ranking from 7th to 3rd.
How effective did Sheard and Golby 2006 find a 7 week MST intervention was on swimming performance? 64% of swimmers performance improved. They also reported improvements in positive MT's and MS's such as Self-Confidence, Attention Control, Motivation etc.
Why do athletes and coaches neglect MST? Lack of Time, Misunderstanding of how/why MST works, Lack of knowledge of how to teach MST, Seem as a sign of weakness (for problem athletes only).
What barriers face Sport Psychologists? Negative Perceptions- (for problem athletes only, may make athletes over think) Barriers at a coach level- Lack of coach knowledge, not knowing how to access sport psychologists, Not understanding the process. Barriers at a Athlete Level- Athletes not interested, Athletes to tired to attend, Previous bad experience.

What is a Needs Analysis? A Needs Analysis is the gaining an understanding of the athletes Psychological Qualities, Sport Demands, Psychological Techniques.
What are the 3 phases of Training and how do they affect MST focus? Preparatory. Acquire psychological techniques. Competition. Further improve abilities and psychological abilities. Transition (Off-Season) Facilitate psychological rest and relaxation.
