Question Answer
WHEELS, PULLEYS AND GEARS UNIT 1.3 OPAL KHAN
What is an axle? An axle is a shaft on which a wheel rotates.
What is a wheel? A wheel is a type of a lever with an axle acting as its fulcrum.
What is a rim? A rim is the outer edge of a wheel.
What is a pulley? A pulley is a wheel with a groove over which a rope or cable can slide.
What is a pulley used for? A pulley is used to change the direction of a force.
How can the force applied be increase? The force applied can be increased by using more than one pulley.
How can a greater mechanical advantage be produced? A greater mechanical advantage can be produced by using a number of pulleys.
What is block and tackle? Block and tackle is a system of two or more pulleys using rope or cable to lift heavy objects.
In older-style machines, what was one wheel connected to another by? In some older-style machines such as lathes, one wheel is connected to another by a rubber belt.
What did the belt do? The belt transfers the spinning motion of the first wheel to the second.
What is one disadvantage with such a system? One disadvantage with such a system is that the belt can slip.
How is this problem avoided? This problem is avoided by using gears, or cogs to transfer the spinning motions.
What are gears? Gears are a wheel with teeth used to turn another gear wheel.
What is the most common type of gears? The most common type of gears are called spur gears.
What is a gear train? A gear train is a system of interconnected gears.
What is the driving gear? The driving gear is the gear that supplies force to another gear.
What is the driven gear? The driven gear is the gear that receives force from a driving gear.
How can a gear be a force multiplier? If the driving gear is smaller than the driven gear, then the combination acts as a force multiplier.
How can a gear be a speed multiplier? If the driving gear is larger than the driven gear then the combination acts as a speed multiplier.
What are some different types of gears? Some different types of gears include: -Bevel gear -Worm gear -Rack and pinion -Idler gear
What is a sprocket? A sprocket is a toothed wheel used to link onto a chain on a bicycle.
