What is the Big Bang Theory? Massive explosion 18 billion years ago which led to the creation of the universe. Gases and matter released by explosion started to cool so stars and planets formed.
What is Evolution? The theory that life began at a simple cell and evolved and developed into the variety of plant and animal life. Animals and plants survived through a process of natural selection.
Christian beliefs about the origins of the universe? -Universe exists for the benefit of humanity -Creationists believe God made the world in 6 days -In the first account of creation humans were created and put in charge of the whole creation -In the second account of creation humans are created before plants and animals
Roman Catholic interpretation of creation? Believe the world was created out of ex nihilo (out of nothing) Some Christians believe that the raw materials of the world were already there when God began creation
Religion VS Science Why VS How Science explains how gases and matter were cooled to create the universe using stars and planets. Religion explains why the universe was created and how it is a test for humans.
Christian beliefs about environment and their response? Many Christians consider the creation accounts to be myths, they just believe that it holds the universal truth that God is creator.
What is natural selection? Tiny differences and genetic mutations between same species can make individual better suited to the environment
Teleological argument? (Making links) World shows it must be designed by someone, too much perfect for humans. Evidence: Human thumb is too perfectly designed to each person
Cosmological argument? (Making links) Universe must have come from somewhere, Christians believe it came from God.
Liberal view of creation? -Genesis is a myth but contains the universal truth that God is creator. -Mankind came after animals -Mankind made to have dominion and stewardship over animals
Theistic Evolution? Roman Catholic belief. The belief that evolution was caused by God, belief that religion and science work together.
What do Anthropocentrics believe? Believe that humans are superior to everything including God and animals. Anthropocentrics are atheists but many disagree with this.
What does Dominion mean? Mankind has been given the authority to RULE OVER the earth and everything in it. (Genesis 1:28) "Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground"
What is stewardship? Looking after something on the behalf of somebody else
What is Genesis 1:29? I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it
Genesis 9:3? AFTER THE FLOOD IN NOAHS ARK "Everything that lives and moves will be food for you"
Church of England attitudes towards animals? Developments in science, medicine and technology should be monitored in the light of Christian ethical principles.
Methodist Church view on animals? The universe as a whole is a product of God's creative and imaginative will. Men and women are to be stewards and curators not exploiters of its resources, material, animal and spiritual.
Quakers view on animals? Believe that the air, sea, earth, forests, animals and ourselves are all intimately connected and the way in which we treat all of these things reflects on ourselves and consequently on God.
Literalist Christian beliefs about the environment? Literalist Christians would have said they had dominion which took over stewardship
Connotations of "Fill the earth and subdue it" Genesis 1:28? Subdue means to conquer which is inadequate as it was given in the garden of Eden (paradise) so the actual meaning is 'to cultivate'. Christians believe it is their duty to conserve the world
What is Green Christianity? Refers to a diverse group of Christians who emphasise the biblical basis for protecting and celebrating the environment. The term indicates not a particular denomination but a shared territory of concern. They look to the Bible for guidance.
RC response to environment? The earth and all life on it is a gift from God given to us to share and develop, not to dominate and exploit. Our actions have consequences from the rights of others and for the resources of the earth.
The world council of churches view Dignity of nature as creation needs to be bound up with out responsibility for the preservation of life
What is 'A Rocha'? Environmental organisation which looks after the environment (Christian group) Runs climate stewards, a global programme for tree planting and city veg patches.
