Question Answer
Energy Capacity to do work
Kinetic energy Energy doing work (in motion)
Potential energy Stored energy
First law of thermodynamics (2) -energy can be changed from one form to another -cannot be created or destroyed
2nd law of thermodynamics (3) -energy changes are not 100% efficient -some energy always lost as heat -entropy (randomness) in universe increases
Cellular metabolism -anabolic: build up, more ordered (dehydration -catabolic: breaking down, less order, hydrolysis
Endergonic (endothermic) Absorb energy and yield products rich in potential energy
Exergonic (exothermic) Release energy and yield products that contain less potential energy than their reactants
Free energy Energy available to do work
If free energy is negative .... Energy is released, reaction is spontaneous (exergonic, heat and light)
If free energy is positive.... Energy is absorbed, reaction is not spontaneous
ATP molecules are key to energy coupling Energy from exothermic reactions is used to power endothermic reactions
When phosphate group breaks off from ATP (3) -Reaction is exergonic -reaction supplies energy for cellular work -energy is transferred
