Question Answer
Drug Induced In susceptable individuals
Symptom Haemolytic Anaemia
G-6-PDH is part of... Pentose Phosphate pathway
Reaction Glucose-6-P + NADP --> NADPH + P-Gluconolactine
Role of Pathway To reduce glutathiones, which keep Hb and RBC membrane proteins in their reduced form
Peroxides Reduces peroxides
Effect of Antimalarials Contain peroxides which cannot be reduced, Hb becomes oxidised to Methemoglobin, and the spleen destroys the RBCs
Favism Mediterranean form of deficiency- occurs when Fava beans are eaten
Fava Beans Also contain peroxides, same effects
Protection May confer protection from Fulciparum malaria, which rely on glutathiones at one point
