Question Answer
WAN? Wide Area Network
LAN? Local Area Network
ISP? Internet Service Protocol
DNS? Domain Name Server
FTP? File Transfer Protocol
What is a Domain Name Server (DNS)? They maintain a directory of domain names and translate them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses
What is the File Transfer Protocol? The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to transfer computer files between a client and server on a computer network
What is Star topology? A network configuration where nodes are added in a modular fashion to a central routing device
What is a "fault tolerant" system? Fault tolerance is the property that enables a system to continue operating properly in the event of the failure of (or one or more faults within) some of its components.
Is Star topology a fault tolerant system? Yes
What is a Network Interface Controller (NIC)? Hardware that connects nodes to a network wired or wireless. -Unique MAC address - user defined IP Address
What is a Media Access Control (MAC) address? A media access control address (MAC address) of a computer is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications at the data link layer of a network segment.
These two protocols are used for regulating low level data transmission in LANs. Ethernet and WiFi
Define switching. Using a device to direct network traffic between nodes.
Define an access point, in relation to the concept of Switching. A wireless hub, broadcasting incoming signals to all wireless nodes
With regards to Switching, what is Infrastructure mode? Switching with WiFi and with and Access point.
With regards to Switching, what is Ad Hoc mode? Node to Node WiFi switching.
What is a repeater? Used to prevent signal degradation and extend signal distance. -Typically built into Ethernet switches and WiFi range extenders
What is a router used for? Typically used to connect nodes/computers/LANs to the internet
What is a modem? "Modulator/Demodulator" - Converts LAN traffic into a signal suitable for transmission to and from ISP
