NEWTON'S FIRST LAW A force is necessary to change the state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line of a body.
LINEAR MOMENTUM The mass of an object multiplied by its velocity. It is a vector.
NEWTON'S SECOND LAW The rate of change of momentum is proportional to the net (resultant) force acting on it.
THE NEWTON 1 Newton is the force required to accelerate a mass of 1 kilogram by 1 metre per second, each second.
MASS The inertia of an object; how easy or difficult it is to accelerate.
WEIGHT The gravitational force exerted on an object, pulling it towards the ground.
NEWTON'S THIRD LAW When body A exerts a force on body B, body B exerts a force on body A that is equal in magnitude, of the same type, and in the opposite direction.
THE PRINCIPLE OF CONSERVATION OF MOMENTUM In any direction, in the absence of external forces, the total momentum of a system remains constant.
IMPULSE Is equal to the change in momentum of a body. It is also equal to the area under a force-time graph.
PERFECTLY ELASTIC COLLISION A collision in which no momentum or kinetic energy is lost.
INELASTIC COLLISIONS A collision in which momentum is conserved but kinetic energy is not.
