| Biblical Counselling. | Counselling and Psychology have been around since the days of Aristotle. The first Christian Counselling took place with Jesus in the Bible. Modern Psychology is seen by some Christian counsellors as satanic. |

| Adams beliefs | He believed that Psychology was in conflict with a Christian understanding of a person. Problems occur when we put ourselves at the centre of life and not GOD. He even went as far as to say in the publication of his widely read, competent to counsel (1970) In this he severely criticised modern Psychiatry and Psychotherapy arguing that they were pervasively secular. |
| Adams beliefs | Adams urged Christians to denounce the Freudian and Humanistic therapies and to look to his Nouthetic model of counselling with the Bible at the centre. He believed that all problems were a result of sin and only through repentance could those said problems be dealt with. Nouthetic was changed to Biblical counselling in about 1993. |
| BC | Founded by J Adams as a recognised area in counselling. His view was that only the word of GOD could help us and everything else was completely secularised. Adams Nouthetic counselling model looks only to GODS word and the Bible and counselling should concentrate on repentance from sin. |
| Biblical Counselling view. | It is on the far left of the continuum. The view is that Psychology is secular as It views psychology as a barrier to Christianity. The Bible is sufficient for the spiritual needs of GODS people. All problems are a result of sin. CHRIST is the solution to our problems. |
| BC | Called anti-psychology. Beck and Banks (1992) in addition, there was a growing realisation that some conservative Churches were misusing the Bible and doing damage to people in their authoritarian subculture. |
| What is the Integration view ?. | Integration stands in the of the middle of the continuum. Formulated in the 1970's. The therapist will adopt several views for counselling, hoping to find the best way forward for the client. Key figures: Alistair McGrath. Stanton Jones. It addresses the Bible and modern Psychology. There is still a debate amongst Integrationists depending on their understanding of the Bible. It is more open to Psychology and science than Biblical counselling and yet it is more interested in integrating Christian faith with Psychology than the levels of explanation approach. It also recognises that the Bible does not provide all the information to fully understand the development and function of human beings and therefor advocates drawing on Psychology and science in order to fully assist clients. |
| I V | The integration of both the disciplines of Psychology and Christian Theology. The Bible and Psychology together provide complementary truths. Integration means approaching the discipline and profession of Psychology with a commitment to having ones Christian convictions shape every aspect of ones work. |
| Integration view and key figures. | Came about in the early 20th century. Key figures includes, Beck, Jones and Butman and Crabb. |
| Integration characteristics | Integration doesn't just describe the therapists views and models they use but also the needs of their client, these may need a more integrative approach. E.G. A client might present with problem which initially can be helped with PCT but further down the line CBT might be proven helpful in order for the client to evaluate and have closure. |
| IV | As integrationist we must be clear where our loyalties lie and base our understanding in the Bible and Theological truth. we must be rigorous in our deciding what is good Psychology and bad. We should be tentative, patient and humble. As a Christian counsellor it is GOD who has brought me to this discipline and one could argue that he has brought about our ability to appreciate Psychology. |

| Biblical counselling critique of IV | Stanton Jones (1991) said that a lot of what passes as Integration today is just anaemic watered down Theological or Biblical view points. |
| Summary | In evaluating and critically comparing 2 approaches to Christian counselling it has been clear to me that although aspects of each of the 5 views share beliefs and disagreements, as counsellors we all share the same goal in that we all want to use what we have learnt to help people with their emotional needs. in the 5 views Stanton L Jones relies on the development of Psychology but always holding true his Christian beliefs where as Adams only believes the Bible can heal emotional problems. In modern Psychotherapies by Jones and Butman, Hoffman notes that some of the obstacles for Christians have been removed by looking at the relational rather than the biological components of personality. |
| Summary | In conclusion, my view lies In both the BC and Integrationists camps. I truly believe that we can solve a lot of our social and psychological problems by looking to GODS word, but there are times when a psychological/physical problem can not be sorted out with prayer alone. i.e, panic attacks. Here psychology and to be more specific understanding who we are form where we have come has a role to play. |
| Summary | A possible reason why the Psychology view acts against the Biblical counselling view. We are warned in scripture not to trust our own wisdom because we can be deceived by our own wisdom. (Proverbs 3:5-6, 14:12, 16:2, 25, 21:2, Jeremiah 17:9) |
| Summary | Most colleges offer training with an Integrationists view at the heart of their teachings. E.g, Waverley, CWR. Very few seminaries are offering programs in purely biblical counseling, most programs are focused on preparing their students for professional accreditation which demands an integrationist curriculum. |
| Summary | If you look at the chronology of Psychology and Biblical counselling, Psychology grew out of BC as it has only been around for about 100 years. |
