"Spools of Suffering" Metaphor - Suggest that the suffering is never ending, the film is in a spool - it is continuous.
"Preparing to intone a Mass" Simile - Suggestive of him having respect for those in the photographs.
"The only light is red and softly glows" Duffy likens it to the red Tabernacle light found in Catholic Churches - Symbolizes the eternal light of Christ. Reference to this is suggestive of it being something that will last for a long time.
"All flesh is grass" Quote from the Old Testament - meaning that Human life is not permanent and will one day end.
"Ordinary pain which simple weather can dispel." The pain that we face at home is nothing like that of war. This pain can be over in a matter of minutes.
"Which don't explode beneath the feet of running children" This shows the reality of war and how we take advantage of every day things such as being able to walk in a field without getting blown up.
