Why did Churchill choose Wavell as viceroy? Military man: - thought he would take orders - thought he would continue Linlithgow's harsh tactics. Wanted to remove him from his previous job (C-in-C Army South East Asia) Didn't seem to have any particular political views or opinions
Which major even did allowed Wavell to first show how skilled he was politically? The Bengal Famine
When was the Bengal Famine? 1943 ( had begun the year earlier but was worst in 43)
How many people died during the Bengal Famine? Between 1 and 3 million people. Many because of disease (malaria and cholera)
How did Wavell react to the Bengal Famine Immediately ordered military assistance - used army to control food distribution and stop the black market. Introduced rationing. Showed skill in bargaining with Churchill to get grain.
Other than the Bengal famine how did Wavell show that he would not be pushed around by Churchill? Fought to get the Simla Conf (1945) arranged. He refused to give up and finally persuaded Churchill to allow it.
Who replaced Wavell as Viceroy? Lord Mountbatten
Why was Wavell replaced? Because Atlee (the new PM) found him difficult to work with - he wouldn't just do as he was told. Gandhi had also pushed for Wavell to be sacked and Atlee had a strong relationship with Congress and Gandhi.
Wavell was considered 'a great man for solutions'. What examples of this are there? Reaction to the Bengal Famine Starting to think practically about partition long before anyone else - even drew up suggested borders.
