Question Answer
Equations WORK DONE Work Done = Force x Distance Work in Joules, Force in Newtons, Distance in Metres
Work Done? work done = force x distance work done = 15N x 20m work done = 300Nm work done = 300Joules!
Equations MOMENTS DEFINITION Moments If a force acts on an object with a pivot, it creates a turning force, which we call a moment
Equations MOMENTS Moments Moment = Force x Perpendicular Distance Perpendicular distance is measured from the line of action of the force to the pivot (axis of rotation)
Moments? moments = force x distance moments = 10N x 0.15m moments = 1.5Nm!
Equations MOMENTS Effort is force applied, Load is force of machine being turned.
Equations PRINCIPLE OF MOMENTS Principle of Moments In equilibrium, the total anticlockwise moment = the total clockwise moment
Equations CENTRE OF MASS DEFINITION The centre of mass of an object is the point at which its mass is concentrated. If the object was suspended, the CoM would be directly below the point of suspension. If it's symmetrical the CoM will be on axis of symmetry
Equations STABILITY DEFINITION Stability An object is stable till its line of action (vertical) passes its base. The centre of mass must be vertically above the base area or it will topple due to the weight causing a moment in the corner.
Equations INCREASING STABILITY Increasing Stability Objects with a lower centre of mass are more stable. To lower the centre of mass, the base area needs to be larger and the base heavier.
Equations PRESSURE
Equations PRESSURE UNITS Pressure Units Force in Newtons Area in Metres* Pressure in N/m*, or 'Pascals' Pressure is the same everywhere in a fluid
