One of the six dimensions of an effective counsel is structure. This refers to the stages of counseling, what are the stages? Initiating, Exploring, Understanding and Acting
In the exploring stage of counseling we gather details about the clients’ situation, what happens in the acting stage? The client carries out the alternatives (puts a plan into action), the counselor and client evaluate the plan to be sure it is working as intended.
During the third stage of counseling, understanding – counselors will try to make sense of the data that we gathered, and work with the clients to generate ideas or solutions, a minimum of how many ideas should be generated? 3, if there are not enough solutions there may be issues in the acting stage
There are 6 steps in both the Financial Planning Model and the Financial Counseling Model, what is the main difference? When using the planning model, clients will be planning for the future, they will be establishing goals and objectives and we will help them devise a plan. When using the counseling model clients will have a problem to solve, relationship building is key; we will diagnose the problem and generate potential solutions.
Give an example of a client with whom we would likely use the financial planning model. (Hint: Plan = goals) Sue has an emergency savings account and would like to start saving for a vacation home and possibly retirement.
Give an example of a client with whom we would likely use the financial counseling model. (Hint: counsel = problem) Sue can’t seem to make it to the end of the month without using credit cards to pay her expenses.
Utilizing the financial counseling model, our client has generated a list of possible solutions and has chosen an action plan; they are ready to implement their plan. As a counselor, list 2 of the things we do during this stage. - Provide support - Schedule follow-up appointment to evaluate progress - Make follow-up phone calls and send follow-up letters - Provide positive feedback
