Question Answer
Regardless of the form of counseling that we choose to use; we can incorporate one or a combination of intervention strategies to help our clients find solutions to their problems or generate ideas to achieve their goals. Give an example of a client situation in which budgeting would not be a helpful strategy. Harry is able to meet his monthly expenses and has $200 in disposable income, he is interested in saving and investment options to best use his money. (Harry needs productive counseling and budgeting does not fall in line with his needs)
Identification of one’s financial condition is one of the intervention strategies, what is one way can we determine a clients’ financial condition? discussion and/or self-scoring questionnaire, client tracking, identify expenses and discuss situation
All decisions and behaviors, financial and otherwise are based on what? attitudes, beliefs and ultimately values
Key to understanding our clients’ is identifying where their core values lie. If your client is overwhelmed by monthly bills, and you determine that she continues to help her grown daughter pay her bills and pays costly dues to be in social clubs, her core values fall into which of the four value categories? (Inner, Social, Physical or Financial) Social, she values belonging and the needs of family come before her own
There are three strategies that we will use when incorporating existing resources that a client has to assist them with their current problem, name one. -use their resources to help them achieve their goals -use their desire as a motivator for behavioral change -incorporate their willingness to work hard to find a solution.
What are some of the advantages of utilizing role playing as in an intervention strategy? - Provides the ability to practice what they plan to say - Gives feedback from a 3rd party - Provides the ability to express their feelings about a situation - Enables them to speculate on possible scenarios or outcomes - Helps them understand a different perspective - Enables them to utilize forward thinking to determine possible solutions
When using confrontation as an intervention strategy, it should be done in what kind of a way? a non-defensive caring way
Give one of the scenarios in which we might use an anecdote to involve our clients. - Diagnosis (“one client realized very quickly exactly how much she was spending at the coffee house”) - Seeding ideas (“I have seen clients cut expense quickly by cutting out a couple of lattes a week”) - Motivational (“one client found that she saved over $100 in the first month of cutting expenses.”)
What are some of the reasons that we might use silence to involve our clients? -to give them time to think -if the client needs time to reflect -so they will take greater responsibility -for a change of pace
There are several ways to strategically involve clients; the following situation would be an example of which way? A financial coach wonders if her client is being upfront and honest, so she purposefully acts and reacts in an honest and upfront manner, in hopes of reciprocation. (Anecdote, Quotation, Modeling or Visualization) Modeling
Helping a client identify situations that might trigger a feeling is a way to change a(n) ___________. (attitude or behavior) attitude
We will use reinforcement strategies to change behavior and attitudes. When should the timing of reinforcement occur? as close in time as possible
When utilizing reinforcement as a strategy to change behavior, what should our reinforcement efforts be focused on, the person or the behavior? the behavior or performance
Reinforcement strategies should be appropriate and the strength of the reinforcement should be determined by what? the importance of the behavior
Name one of the extinguishing strategies. Determine why, withhold reinforcers, reinforce opposite behavior, implosion
Max enjoys a motorcycle ride after work on Friday nights; this becomes problematic when he drives through car lots during his ride - as he has purchased 4 used vehicles that he did not need and could not afford in the past 6 months. We want to use an extinguishing strategy to overcome this negative behavior. How might you use implosion? Implosion is visualizing behavior at its worst. “Max, consider what might happen to you financially if you drove through 3 car lots every Friday and bought a car at each lot. Even at $1,000 a piece – you could easily spend $12,000 on vehicles you don’t need and can’t afford, in just one month!”
When counseling more than one person at a time, we need to consider communication patterns. What is the difference between possible communication patterns and an active pattern, which pattern should we try to maintain? Possible communication pattern describes the many different communication paths (Bob to Mary, Mary to Bob, Bob to me, me to Bob…etc.) whereas in an active pattern the counselor acts as a hub, controlling the communication in more of a teaching atmosphere. We should try to maintain the active pattern.
Who do you pace in a multiple person counsel? the person talking
We can use exploring techniques to gather information during a multiple person counsel just as we can in an individual counsel. Special attention should be given to whom? the other people’s reactions

What kind of a form might we use as a process assessment (formative evaluation)? Client rating form at the end of each session or a self-evaluation form the counselor can complete after each session.
Following a clients’ successful completion of a Debt Management Plan, they are sent a short survey to complete and return. This is an example of what kind of evaluation? Summative
