Thermoplastics: Thermoplastic materials are types of plastic which become soft when they are heated
and hard when they cool down. They can be melted and formed as many times as we like. This is because
their polymers have weak bonds.
Polystyrene (PS): This plastic is very lightweight and transparent, it can be used for packaging and and for
heat insulation.
Polypropylene (PP): This plastic can be modeled and died easely and it is resistant to solvents and
splintering.
Polyethylene (PE): This plastic offers good chemical resistance
and it’s non-toxic, so it is suitable for food packaging.
PVC (polyvinyl chloride): This plastic is highly resistant to abrasion and impact. It can also be used
in pipes , cable insulation and profiles for doors and windows.
PET(polyethylene terephthalate): This plastic is completely recyclable, transparent and easy to dye. It is also
suitable for food use.
Teflon: This plastic is resistant to chemicals and high temperatures. It also has excellent non-stick
properties .
Polycarbonate(PC): This plastic is resistant to impact and heat. It also has optical
transparency.
Thermoset :The polymer chains of thermoset plastics criss-cross to form networks. Because of
this bond, the plastics can be shaped using heat, but only once. Once you have formed it you can
re-melt it to crate new forms.
Melamine: This plastic is resistant to high temperatures and chemicals as well as it is also easy
to clean. It can be used as a coating for wooden boards and in the manufacture of kitchen
cupboards.
Bakelite: This plastic is hard and brittle and a dark plastic that withstands heat
very well.
Polyesters resin: This plastic is rigid and brittle
Elastomers: They are very flexible materials that recover their shape and dimensions when external
forces stop acting on them. They degrade easily with the heat and cannot be re-melted once they
are formed.
Rubber: This plastic can be natural or synthetic. Thanks to it’s elasticity it can be used to make tyres, hoses, rubber bands etc.
Neoprene: This plastic is flexible, insulated and waterproof. It is ideal for Immersion suits.
