  1. Subject
    1. Simple Subject
      1. The subject names who or what the sentence is about. Some subjects are simple, identifying only one noun or pronoun.
        1. Example: Fish swin.
      2. Complete Subject
        1. A complete subject is the simple subject,the main word or words in a subject, along with any of the modifiers that describe the subject.
          1. Example: The fish swin.
        2. Compound Subject
          1. Compound subjects contain two or more simple subjects joined with a coordinating conjunction such as and or or
            1. Example: The fish and turtles swim.
        3. Predicate
          1. Simple Predicate
            1. The predicate is the verb in the sentence that makes a statement about the subject.
              1. Example: Mary works
            2. Complete Predicate
              1. A complete predicate is the verb or predicate and the words associated with it.
                1. Example: John rode his bicycle downtown yesterday.
              2. Compound Predicate
                1. If one subject in the sentence has more than one predicate, it is called a compound predicate.
                  1. Example: John rode his bicycle yesterday and crashed it into an oak tree.
              3. The Objects
                1. Direct Object
                  1. The direct object is a noun or pronoun that answers the question "what or whom?" after an action verb, and often receives the action of the verb.
                    1. Example: John ate the cake. (It answers the question, "John ate what?")
                  2. Indirect Object
                    1. An indirect object is a noun or pronoun that tells to whom, for whom, to what, or for what something is done. Most often, the indirect object is placed before the direct object.
                      1. Example: Jay sent his mother flowers. It answers the question, "Jay sent flowers to whom?"
                  3. The Complements
                    1. Subject Complement
                      1. The subject complement completes the meaning of the subject by renaming it or modifying it after a linking verb.
                        1. Example: Ellen is a lifeguard.
                          1. Lifeguard renames Ellen and completes the meaning of the subject by telling us that Ellen and the lifeguard are the same person.
                      2. Object Complement
                        1. An object complement is a noun, a pronoun, or an adjective that follows a direct object to rename it or state what it has become.
                          1. Example: I found the guard sleeping.
