Objective: To relate how the different forms of forced
labor were a form of slavery.
Forced Labor during the Colonial Period
To stablish a proper and strong control over native people, Spanish
authorities stablished different forms of forced labor. This allowed
Spaniards to use indigenous people as servants and forced them to work in
various ways.
La Mita
La Mita was not invented by the Spaniards. It had already
existed during the time of the Incas but during the colonial
period it was used to benefit Spanish people.
The Mita system made indigenous communities send groups of
males between 18 to 50 years old to work for the colonizers. They
worked between 12 to 14 hours per day under very difficult
conditions. Mitayos worked in different areas such as domestic
service, farming, weaving in textile shops (obrajes), public
services or mining among others. For all indigenous, the worst
job was to work in the mining mita. At mining mitas, working
conditions were terrible and many indigenous died.
La Encomienda
In this system of labor, a group of natives was given to
a Spaniard (encomendero), so that he would teach the
indigenous people about the Christian religion. In
exchange for this act, the native people had to pay the
encomendero a tribute. The tribute was inherited
from parents to their sons. Many Spaniards preferred
that the indigenous work for them instead of paying
the tribute. Thanks to this system, Spaniards had
control over the indigenous people and forced them
to work in terrible conditions.
Los Obrajes
The obrajes were textile shops.
Spaniards made indigenous
people work in this sector and
working conditions were
deplorable. The obrajes
produced many types of fabrics
made of looms. The main
product of the factories was the
blue woolen cloth that was
exported to Peru and Bolivia.
Also, they produced hats whose
main clients were the
Indigenous people of the
Sierra.
After reading the different forms of
forced labor, do you think they were
similar to slavery? Explain.
