LADY MACBETH TRAITS

Rash
1. Ex: After reading the letter from Macbeth, she quickly thought of a fowl deed; to kill Duncan. She did not rethink her plan or asked Macbeth if it was a good plan. She followed through a plan that was not thoroughly thought of
  1. Quote: "Hie thee hither, that I may pour my spirits in thine ear, and chastise with the valour of my tongue all that impedes thee from the golden round which fate and metaphysical aid doth seem to have thee crowned withal." - Lady Macbeth (1.5.24-29)
2. Ex: Lady Macbeth killed herself thinking that it was the only option. She did not think about how Macbeth would miss him. The lords might have forgiven her if she told the truth and she would be pardoned from death.
  1. Quote: "The Queen, my lord,is dead." - Seyton (5.5.18)
3. Ex: It was rash of her to tell Macbeth to kill Duncan. There was no hesitation in telling him and led to unfortunate events, even for her.

Cunning
1. Ex: Lady Macbeth was the woman behind the plan of Macbeth becoming king. She thought of a way to make him king and herself queen without being caught. Her intelligence brought her to a plan in which she persuaded Macbeth to do the dirty work.
  1. Quote: "Hie thee hither, that I may pour my spirits in thine ear, and chastise with the valour of my tongue all that impedes thee from the golden round which fate and metaphysical aid doth seem to have thee crowned withal." - Lady Macbeth(1.5.24-29)
2. Ex: During the banquet between the lords and noblemen of Scotland, Macbeth saw Banquo's ghost. His guests were curious about the things he was saying and started to ask questions. Luckily, Lady Macbeth was smart enough to think of a way to prevent the questions from being answered because the questions might have led to Macbeth revealing their murderous acts. She told them that Macbeth was just sick and they shouldn't ask him questions because they might make him worse.
  1. Quote: "I pray you, speak not. He grows worse and worse. Questions enrages him. At once, good night. Stand not upon the order of young going, but go at hence." - Lady Macbeth(3.4.139-142)
3. Ex: Lady Macbeth acknowledged that Macbeth had the dagger which was evidence that Macbeth killed Duncan. She was focused and smart and therefore she knew that she had to dispose of the dagger and plant it on the guards. This shows that she was cunning.
  1. Quote: "Infirm of purpose! Give me the daggers." - Lady Macbeth (2.2.63-64)
Remorseful
1. Ex: Lady Macbeth had such great remorse that it caused her to be mentally ill. When she could not take it anymore she committed suicide. The remorse inside her was too great and took over her life
  1. Quote: "The Queen, my lord,is dead." - Seyton (5.5.18)
2. Ex: Lady Macbeth felt that she would be happier dead, than to live knowing that she was part of a murder. The murder of Duncan did not bring her joy. She questions the actions she has done.
  1. Quote: "Nought's had, all's spent, where our desire is got without content. 'Tis safer to be that which we destroy than by destruction dwell in doubtful joy." - Lady Macbeth(3.2.6-9)
3. Ex: Lady Macbeth was haunted by her actions that led to the murderous acts of Macbeth. She had these nightmares because deep inside of her she was feeling remorse. The feeling of being part of murderous acts was too much for to keep inside and came out as sleep talk.
  1. Quote: "What, will these hands ever be clean? No more of that, my lord, no more of that. You mar all this starting." - Lady Macbeth (5.1.35-38)
Dominant/Bossy
1. Ex: Lady Macbeth ordered Macbeth to kill Duncan and didn't even ask for his opinions. She was in control of Macbeth and did not take no for an answer; she had control over the murderous acts of Macbeth.
  1. Quote: " To alter favour ever is to fear. Leave the rest to me." -Lady Macbeth (1.5.80-80)
2. Ex: Since Macbeth did not plant the evidence on the guards, Lady Macbeth does it herself. Again we see Lady Macbeth show that she is the dominant one and she will do as she pleases to go through with the plan.
  1. Quote: " Infirm of purpose! Give me the daggers." - Lady Macbeth (2.2.63-64)
3. Ex: When Macbeth returned from killing Duncan, Lady Macbeth told Macbeth to wash his hands because she was afraid someone might see his bloody hands. This shows that Lady Macbeth was the caretaker of Macbeth and showed that she was the boss and Macbeth would have done whatever she wanted him to.
  1. Quote: "So Brainsickly of things. Go get some water and wash this filthy witness from your hand." - Lady Macbeth (2.2.55-56)
Manipualtive
1. Ex: Deception was key in Lady Macbeth's plan to become queen. She manipulated Duncan into thinking she was lovely and a great hostess to make him easier to kill.
  1. Quote: " See, see our honoured hostess! The love that follows us sometime is our trouble, which still we thank as love. Herein I teach you how you shall bid God yield us for your pains, and thank us for your trouble." - Duncan (1.6.12-16)
2. Ex: When the trumpets were played to signify Duncan's death Lady Macbeth acted as if she did not know. She manipulated the whole croud into thinking that she is innocent.
  1. Quote: " Woe, alas! What, in our house?" - Lady Macbeth (2.3.91-92)
3. Ex: She filled Macbeth with confidence through telling him the outcome of killing Duncan and the prophecies the witches have mentioned. This allowed her to manipulate him to commit murder.
  1. Quote: As though art in desire? wouldst thou have that which thou esteemest the ornament of lie and live a coward in thine own esteem, letting "I dare not" wait upon "I would" like the poor cat in the adage?" - Lady Macbeth (1.7.44-48)
