1. Kuelap is formed by two
gigantic artificial platforms
superimposed, on which a city
was raised that covers an
approximate extension of 450
hectares.
2. The main material for the
construction in Kuelap is the
limestone blocks edged without
polishing, which have different
qualities of finishings, being the most
elaborated ones those destined to the
ceremonial constructions.
3. Kuélap is located at 3 thousand
meters above sea level in the
district of El Tingo, province of
Luya, 72 kilometers southwest of
the city of Chachapoyas. It was
discovered on January 31, 1843 by
Crisostomo Nieto, judge of first
instance of Chachapoyas.
4. A big city, like Kuelap, must have had
a complete food supply system for its
inhabitants. The valleys near this site
are fertile and abundant in agricultural
products, which in the times of the
Chachapoyas were cultivated with corn,
beans, tarhui, potatoes, achira, mashua,
olluco, arracacha and yacon. As well as
livestock animals like the llama,
domestic animals like the guinea pig,
the majás, among other wild animals
whose bones have been found but have
been identified.
